Martha’s Vineyard Family Photos: A Session Style Quiz
If you are looking to have your family photos taken on Martha’s Vineyard and aren’t sure what kind of session you want, there are some important considerations. You must think about your family dynamics and your vision of the session and what kind of story you want your photos together to tell.
I love a classic posed photo - everyone looking at the camera and smiling. I aim for love and connection to take center stage in these moments. The best way to accomplish these types of photos is to make family photos a regular part of your family’s life, because that is how to train the children about what to expect.
But I also love candid images from your session - when no one is looking at the camera and I catch you being yourselves. My way of working as a photographer is to build time into the session for both the posed and the candid moments, and part of my expertise is encouraging the candid and anticipating the moments as they arise.
I also really adore the chance for silliness. I believe that by giving space for fun and chaos and allowing children to be themselves during our session, you get some of the best images: ones that show their authentic personalities. Because what else are photos for, but to stop time and document who your kiddos are at different points in their life.
Some other considerations I like to account for during our session planning….
Whenever you have the chance to gather multiple generations together, it is always a time for photos. Family photos are the stories that your family will tell for years to come. They are the thread that ties us to the past and to the future, and taking the time to come together will never be a regret.
When we get the chance, I love to show in concrete ways how time passes and how photos are the one and only true way to freeze that inexorable spool, like in these same images that we repeat each year.
