Sitter Sessions
The first year of life holds so many profound changes - every cliche a deep truth about time speeding by. Your tiny, curly baby unfolds and wakes up, then pauses briefly at sitting before they're crawling, walking, then running (and running from you). A sitter session is for that stopover, that first great muscle leap - that small glorious window in which your baby stays where you put them down, and grins at you.
Two Ways of Looking at Maternity Photos
As a photographer on Martha’s Vineyard specializing in parenthood photography, a maternity session is one of my favorite occasions.
This liminal time of in-between, on the cusp of a change that will change everything, is so worth capturing.
I offer two kinds of maternity sessions - either in my studio or outside. There are reasons to love both…
9 Months In/9 Months Out
The gestational period is so significant, we all have “9 months” in our head and collective consciousness, even though a pregnancy is really more like 40 weeks, which is more like 10 months (or 10 lunar cycles).
Baby Charlotte
I post most of my birth story photography over on my Martha’s Vineyard Birth Photographer site, but I do like to cross-pollinate my pages. Birth photography is my one true love, and it is always an immense honor and privilege to join families on one of the most important days of their lives and to document the moments that memory will blur.
Martha’s Vineyard Newborns: A Wool Series
I often joke with my clients that I have no real fashion sense of my own - I rely on the “uniform wardrobe” where I have multiple pairs of the same outfit and I wear the same thing to work every day and the same thing on days off. It helps minimize decision fatigue, they say. But when it comes time to style your newborn session, that aspect of the creativity is one of my favorite parts.
Martha’s Vineyard Family Photos: A Session Style Quiz
If you are looking to have your family photos taken on Martha’s Vineyard and aren’t sure what kind of session you want, there are some important considerations. You must think about your family dynamics and your vision of the session and what kind of story you want your photos together to tell.
The Home Stretch: Martha’s Vineyard Maternity Sessions
We have an idea in our conversations with expecting parents about being “almost done” or “almost there” as the pregnancy draws to its end - but I think it’s worth reminding ourselves that birth is not the finish line, but the starting line. Birth is an exit, but also an entrance.
Robin and Alltay: Moshup Beach, Martha’s Vineyard Elopement
After 20 years, you don’t need a huge party to get married to your love. Just the sand, the water, the perfect light, and the beach almost to yourself.
Baby Oliver
While all babies have a special birth story to tell, Oliver’s is about emerging to a slightly darker world: little Ollie was born at the peak of the eclipse.
Baby Zea: Martha’s Vineyard Home Birth
Every birth I attend is a special one to me, as each new life is a miracle - but all of the firsts are always extra special.
Baby-Friendly Project Revisited
I love the privilege of getting to meet babies within their first day or two of life. and I am honored to be invited into your space.
My Favorite Things 2023
For the last few years, I’ve run a contest on my Facebook page to share some of my favorite images of the year and to celebrate the love and connection I try to capture in every session. This year, I made a video of some of the highlights!
Dads Need Skin-to-Skin Too
I have always found something so sweet in the juxtaposition of newborn baby on their father’s chest. The tenderness, the power. The meeting of that new person at last and the oxytocin flood that holding them can give you.
Baby Imogen: A Martha's Vineyard Baby
You will never forget the first moment you met your baby, but photos help you remember all of the rest of your birth story.
Nicole and Alvaro: An Edgartown Elopement
Not only is the Edgartown Lighthouse a great place to get engaged on Martha’s Vineyard and a great place for family photos, it’s also an ideal spot for your Edgartown elopement.
Phil and Katie: A Jaws Proposal
Martha’s Vineyard is a very popular place to get engaged - whether you’ve only visited once or whether you are generational visitors, it’s an easy place to fall in love with and then to want to make permanent your own love.
When Phil reached out to me about doing a Jaws-related proposal, I knew his reason for choosing Martha’s Vineyard as the engagement spot was a little different. I consider it an important part of what I do when I photograph proposals to help the proposer craft their moment to fit both the vibe of their relationship, and the meaning and significance of the occasion.
Newborn Photography: The Squishiest Days
Many new parents are ambivalent or undecided about having photos done - and it is a commitment, to get out of the house within those earliest days when night and day have been jumbled and you’re different people. But no one ever regrets doing newborn photos.
Martha's Vineyard Proposals: Edgartown Lighthouse Edition
I don’t know if Edgartown Lighthouse is THE most popular spot for proposals, but it’s definitely one of the most-requested spots.
The Mammal Celebration Continues: Maternity Photos on Martha's Vineyard
You might know that I love photographing newborn babies. And I love photographing birth. But I also love photographing before all of that - those days when your body is hosting another body, a mammalian miracle that is both profound and astonishing.
Many new parents-to-be that I meet aren’t sure about having maternity photos done.
Now You're the Big Kid: Newborn Siblings
I know when my own kiddo found out a new baby was on the way, there were the typical excitement/nonchalance/dimissal/excitement phases, followed by - after second kiddo’s actual arrival - even more typical phases of excitement/sorrow/non-plussed avoidance/nostalgia. But I do know that to see the little ones I love most in the world loving each other is the truest bliss and satisfaction in my heart
