Martha's Vineyard Proposals
Love marches on, no matter the season, but this has been a busy season for marriage proposals. I love to photograph proposals and I always work with the proposer to create a moment that fits the personality of your intended betrothed, whether that’s staging a decoy subject, hiding in the shrubbery, or pretending we’re just out for a birthday photo session. I often visit the site of your proposal in advance so that I can guide you on the best light direction and might leave you subtle cues, like a line drawn in the shore wrack, a pile of discarded flower petals, or even just a wink as we make surreptitious eye contact before you start.
For Tom and Jen, the hottest day of the summer was the backdrop for this romantic moment at Edgartown Lighthouse.
Often a couple wants to be alone during the proposal, but sometimes the whole family is invited (unbeknownst to the proposee). For Shannon, she had planned an elaborate evening with both sides of the family expecting a white party. See more of this sweet proposal on a cloudy August evening against the cliffs of Lucy Vincent Beach.
For Jack, he forgot to take off his sunglasses (or to figure out how to ask Audra without tipping her off to something - even though, as he told me in one of our planning consult calls, the likelihood of Audra knowing this was happening was 99.9%), so we recreated the moment again without glasses.
On a recent sunrise morning at Lobsterville Beach, Heath and Val walked their dogs straight into a marriage proposal. The laughter is because it was clear now why the coffee trip had to be rushed. One of my favorite parts of witnessing the proposal is when the ruse is up and it becomes clear just how much planning went in to this moment.
They say Martha’s Vineyard is a great place to get married, and I say it’s also a great place to get engaged. If you’re planning on popping the bended-knee question to your sweetie and want photos to capture their reaction, I’d love to hear from you.
