One of the things that I often think about is how photography is a tool to document and capture time as it passes, a method to freeze what spools inexorably on in one direction away from us. There’s an existential underpinning behind all these adorable faces. The first year of life shows the truth in the idea that humans are born too early, that we still need a remarkable amount of time of protection and care compared to other mammals. But the transformation over that 12 months of long days and the shortest year is the most dramatic and it’s one of my favorite series to #capturethejourney.

All the newborns are here and here and here and here. The next big milestone is 3 months, which I love for the variety of looks that are possible - smiles are more consistent, necks sturdier, and true interactivity has settled in, while some babies are still as foldable as newborns and might even fall asleep.

The next big milestone is 6 months, which still holds a wide space for the differences in development by this point. Maybe your 6 month old sits unattended or maybe they prefer to lie on their backs or stomachs. Maybe they are siblings wearing the same favorite outfit.

I do like to keep the series going with a quarterly stop at 9 months, but sometimes I jump all the way from 6 to 12. Happy first birthday to these sweet monkeys.
